February Job Numbers Released by Statistics Canada

Published on March 12, 2021

Employment in Ontario increased by 100,300 in February. In the last nine months, Ontario's employment has increased by over 829,000, and almost 27,000 more men and women work in manufacturing today than pre-COVID.

Despite these positive numbers, thousands of workers, families and businesses – individual Ontarians, not simply numbers in a statistics report - continue to feel the impact of the global pandemic. Our government understands the difficulty people are experiencing and that’s why we are providing unprecedented support to help businesses and their employees.

We know that small business owners are being significantly impacted by these difficult but necessary restrictions. That is why we introduced the Ontario Small Business Support Grant. It provides a minimum of $10,000 and up to $20,000 to eligible small business owners to help navigate this challenging period.

Already, Ontario has made $1.3 billion in payments through the Ontario Small Business Support Grant. Nearly 100,000 businesses have received the grants after having to close or significantly restrict their operations due to the Provincewide Shutdown. Applications remain open until March 31, 2021.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. We are making steady progress executing our Vaccine Distribution Plan, and in fact have now administered more than one million doses of the vaccine. Until vaccines are provided to every person who wants one, we will remain focused on keeping people safe, protecting jobs and defeating the virus.

We know that people across Ontario continue to struggle during this challenging period. Now more than ever, our government is committed to supporting businesses, workers, and families as we plan for our economic recovery and a more prosperous future.
