Holiday Testing BlitzPublished on December 16, 2021
Every week, over one million rapid tests are deployed to thousands of workplaces, hospitals, home and community care settings, long-term care homes, and schools and child care centres across the province.
As of December 14, 2021, Ontario has distributed over 45 million rapid tests to thousands of workplaces, hospitals, home and community care settings, long-term care homes, and schools and childcare centres across the province. This includes an additional 11 million rapid tests for every single public-school student learning in-person ahead of the December break to add an additional layer of protection over the holiday period and as students return to school in January.
Ontario deploys every single test received from the federal government, and continues to look for opportunities to expand access to rapid testing for all Ontarians.
The government continues to urge the federal government to increase the number of approved rapid tests available for use in Ontario and across the country. Ontario is also directly procuring additional rapid tests where possible to fulfill necessary supply needs over the next several weeks.
There will be more tests made available at other locations throughout the province as more locations are being added daily.
Holiday Pop-Up Testing Blitz
To provide an additional layer of protection against COVID-19 and variants including Omicron, the government has launched a holiday testing blitz to offer rapid antigen tests to individuals free of charge at pop-up sites and select LCBO stores across the province.
Working with local health partners, community organizations, and businesses, we are bringing free rapid testing to high-traffic settings like malls, transit hubs, holiday markets, and public libraries during the holiday season.
This is a true Team Ontario effort, and we’re so thankful for the many organizations who continue to support Ontario’s’ pandemic response.
Rapid antigen screening is an additional layer of protection to proactively identify cases and mitigate community transmission, while we continue to strengthen our vaccine rollout to protect ourselves and loved ones.
With an increased demand for rapid tests and globally constrained supply, we continue to urge the federal government to increase the number of approved rapid tests available for use in Ontario and across the country.
Vaccines remain our best defense against the virus. While we encourage Ontarians to use the free rapid tests, it is critical that everyone to get their booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as you can. If you haven’t received your first or second dose of the vaccine, now is the time.
Ontarians can visit Ontario.ca/holidaytesting to find out if pop-up rapid antigen screening sites will be available in their area.
Vaccine appointments can be booked online at York Public Health COVID-19 Vaccination Site or by calling 1-877-464-9675.
