IRS Burial SitesPublished on June 15, 2021
Ontario will work in collaboration with Indian Residential School Survivors, Indigenous Elders, leaders and communities to identify, protect and commemorate Indian Residential School burial sites and cemeteries across the province.
Ontario is committing $10 million to establish a collaborative process that will inform and guide this difficult work and to support communities at every stage of their planning.
The painful legacy of Indian Residential schools has resulted in ongoing, intergenerational trauma for survivors, families and communities and funding is available to ensure culturally appropriate, trauma-informed supports are available as this work is undertaken.
As we advance meaningful reconciliation, it is important that all of us in Ontario continue to deepen our collective understanding of the legacy of the Indian Residential School system.
