Ontario 511 for Winter Highway Maintenance Updates

Published on December 03, 2020

We recognize that the winter weather can create significant challenges for drivers, especially in Northern Ontario.

We have some of the highest winter maintenance standards in North America.

The government’s top priority is the safety and well-being of the people of Ontario.

We are taking action to make our roads safer than ever this year and helping people get around more easily.

Plowing begins once 2 centimetres of snow or slush begins to accumulate on the roadway.

Ontario 511 is the official source for information about traffic, highway and weather conditions to help drivers make smarter, safer driving choices so that people, families and businesses can get where they need to be.

Ontario 511, bilingual traveller information can be accessed via Twitter (@511Ontario), phone (dial 5-1-1), web (ontario.ca/511), or new app.

The ministry encourages travellers to plan their journeys using Ontario 511 features:

  • Highway road conditions
  • 600+ Cameras across the province
  • Weather forecasts and radar provided by Environment Canada
  • Forecasted Driving Conditions
  • Track My Plow to track the current and past locations of snow plows
  • Incidents and closures

The new Ontario 511 App provides up-to-date highway information and also includes the ability to switch between “Commercial Vehicle” mode and “Public Driver” mode.
