Ontario Helping Energy Customers Save Money with Green Button

Published on November 09, 2021

Ontario is enhancing customer choice with a new Green Button standard that will allow customers to track and control energy use on their computer or smartphone to reduce bills and save money.

Starting this fall, utilities will be required to implement Green Button within twenty-four months, by November 1, 2023.

Once implemented, residential and commercial customers will be able to download data on their electricity and gas usage and use an app to receive helpful tips for increasing energy efficiency and saving money.

By giving customers easy access to their energy use data, they can finally be in the driver’s seat and take control of where their money goes.

Green Button is good news for consumers, for utilities and for our environment. Studies have found that easy access to energy data, which Green Button, along with smart home devices, can help consumers make informed decisions and achieve energy savings of up to 18 percent.

This announcement also builds on the introduction of greater choice for electricity customers by allowing them to select the electricity pricing plan that is best for them. Since November 1, 2020, more than 280,000 Ontario electricity customers have taken advantage of this opportunity to better manage their bills and save money.
