Ontario Making Additional Investment to Attract Young People to Skilled Trades Careers

Ontario’s trades are the backbone of our economy. More young people need to know that a job in the trades opens doors to bigger paycheques, with a pension and benefits. The trades can be their ticket to building a better life, strong family, and a stronger community for us all.

That is why this government is investing an additional $90 million over the next three years to introduce more students to rewarding and lucrative careers in the trades and ensuring employers have the workers they need to grow their businesses and drive our economy.

This investment responds to the Apprenticeship Youth Advisors report, released today, which includes several recommendations to help solve the shortage of skilled labour workers Ontario is currently facing.

The government is also investing an additional $2.9 million, for a total of $20 million annually, to expand the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) and provide more opportunities for students.

To encourage employers to take on more apprentices, the province’s investments in achievement incentives and pre-apprenticeship training will increase to over $77 million annually, starting in 2022-2023. As a result, employers could earn up to $17,000 per person through the Achievement Incentive for hiring apprentices from underrepresented groups, including women, BIPOC people, newcomers, Francophones and people with disabilities. The government is equipping students with the job and life skills that will help them gain access to meaningful and well-paid employment.

 

Ontario Helping More People Train for New Careers and Opportunities

The province is facing the greatest labour shortage in a generation. Across Ontario there are over 300,000 jobs waiting to be filled. This is why we are investing in programs that will connect more people to meaningful in-demand careers close to home.

Through the Second Career program, workers can receive tuition for training programs of 52 weeks duration or less, including eligible college and some university courses, micro-credential programs, and other vocational training programs.

Each worker can get up to $28,000 to pay for their education and living expenses as they pursue training to start a new career. Additional support may be available for applicants requiring disability-related supports, childcare, or accommodation near their training.

The government is also investing an additional $5 million to expand the program in 2021-22. This expansion will support unemployed individuals with little or no work experience, those who are self-employed and those in the gig economy.

We are also proposing to extend the temporary, refundable Ontario Jobs Training Tax Credit to 2022, to help workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic get back into the workforce.

The Ontario Jobs Training Tax Credit provides up to $2,000 in relief for 50 per cent of a person’s eligible training expenses, such as tuition at an eligible Canadian institution and occupational exam fees.

The credit is also refundable, which means people can benefit whether they owe any Ontario Personal Income Tax.

These changes build on the government’s work to invest in skills training opportunities and attract investments that will create good, well-paying jobs in Newmarket-Aurora and every region of the province.
