Ontario Together Fund Announcement for Kontrol BioCloud

Published on February 05, 2021

The Ontario government is providing $2 million to CEM Specialties Inc. (CEMSI), a London based subsidiary of Kontrol Technologies, through the Ontario Together Fund to help commercialize and accelerate production of a COVID-19 detector called Kontrol BioCloud.

Kontrol Biocloud continuously monitors the presence of airborne viruses like the SARS-COV-2, as well as promoting air circulation, monitoring air quality and sampling continuously for pathogens like viruses, bacteria and fungi.

When BioCloud detects a virus, it provides an alert in the cloud or over a local intranet. BioCloud was designed for places where people gather, including schools, offices, long-term care homes, hospitals, public transit and manufacturing facilities.

With Ontario’s support, CEMSI will accelerate scale-up of production, enabling the company to reduce pre-manufacturing time. The company expects to produce up to 20,000 units per month when production is fully underway.

The product will be manufactured in Ontario, with more than 85 per cent of its components also to be produced in the province. The company anticipates supporting the creation of up to 250 direct jobs and up to 750 indirect jobs.

Ontario’s world-class innovation and manufacturing sectors continue to step up and respond with made-in-Ontario solutions in the fight against COVID-19, both now and to ensure our future preparedness.

Through the Ontario Together Fund, the government is delivering targeted investments that will increase the province’s stockpile of made-in-Ontario products and PPE. This new innovation, manufacturing and research capacity will help the province to combat the current COVID-19 outbreak and prepare for potential challenges in the future, while supporting local businesses during the safe and gradual reopening of the province.

Across Ontario, the business community has continued to demonstrate the true meaning of the “Ontario Spirit” by providing equipment and supplies that will protect people, frontline workers and communities in the fight against COVID-19 and as we continue our efforts to reopen Ontario’s economy safely.
