Vigil hosted by the Newmarket Islamic CentrePublished on June 15, 2021
REMARKS by MPP Christine Elliott - Evening Vigil at the Newmarket Islamic Centre, 700 Mulock Dr. Newmarket - Sunday, June 13, 2021
This evening we gather here at the Newmarket Islamic Centre in support of our local community who are grieving the horrific deaths of a three-generation family in London a week ago today.
I am here this evening to share my deep concern regarding the tragic loss of life of the Afzaal family, and to offer my sincere condolences and prayers, for the lives lost and for their nine-year-old son, Fayez’s recovery.
There is no place for hatred or Islamophobia in any society, and it is heartbreaking that such a horrific act of violence occurred in our province and our country.
Newmarket is home to a strong, vibrant Muslim community, filled with compassionate and hard-working individuals and families that strengthen the social fabric of our community and our province. I understand that recent events have left many of you feeling afraid and anxious. My heart breaks for you and the Muslim community during this incredibly difficult time. Everyone has the right to feel respected and safe.
As your Member of Provincial Parliament, I stand with you. I am here to listen to your concerns and work with you to ensure a diverse and inclusive community.
Thank you to the Newmarket Islamic Centre board, chairman Jamal Massadeh, Executive Board Member Aziz Mirza, and all of your members who helped coordinate this evenings’ vigil.
We are stronger together, all of us, no matter our race or religion. I stand with you in unity. I stand with you in kindness, love and peace.
